Life is made up of many moments. Some can be challenging, some filled with joy, and there are some that remind us of the strength we carry within. At Boomerang Nutrition, we believe in marking the moments that matter. For our ambassador, Melissa Smith, the past few years have been a journey through both hardship and hope, culminating in a landmark legal victory and the start of an inspiring new chapter in para dressage.

In December 2018, Melissa’s world was irrevocably changed when her horse was spooked by dogs that were being walked off lead by a professional dog walker on a Surrey bridleway. The accident left her with life‑changing injuries: a smashed pelvis, broken back, and a head injury.

As well as dealing with the physical impact of the accident, there were years of litigation, with the case eventually going to trial in 2023. Despite attempts by the defendant’s legal team to contest the circumstances, the judge ruled that the dog walker had been negligent and owed Melissa a duty of care.

This precedent-setting judgment received recognition across the equestrian industry as well as extensive coverage at a national level. It has changed the legal landscape for the equestrian community and has reinforced the responsibility of dog handlers and strengthens safety for riders across the UK.

This case was not just a personal victory. It was a step forward for the wider equestrian community, ensuring riders can feel more secure when sharing public spaces with dogs.

Despite being told that she might never ride again, Melissa is back in the saddle and excited to begin competing once more. While the legal process was long and often difficult, Melissa’s resilience has shone through. With the case now settled, she has been able to focus on her future. Using her medical evidence, she has been officially graded both nationally and internationally by the British Equestrian Federation (BEF) and FEI respectively as a Grade V Para rider.

This is not just about overcoming adversity but about celebrating the opportunities ahead. It is a powerful reminder that even in the face of challenges, exciting opportunities can be around the corner.
