No, CoolStance Copra contains 10% coconut oil which will replace other oils such as linseed, soya or vegetable. The oils in other meals are usually made up of Long Chain Fatty Acids (LCFA), which are polyunsaturated. This means they are digested slowly, and are prone to rancidity during storage. Some commercialised oils are made using GMO seeds/grains. The fatty acids in CoolStance are made up of medium chain triglycerides (MCT) and are saturated. This means they are readily digested, absorbed by the horse and are not prone to rancidity during storage. CoolStance is GMO and chemical free.

Most horses love the taste of CoolStance. However, some horses can find the taste a little unusual and do take a little longer to adjust. Most modern day feeds are coated in molasses or other glucose based coatings to reduce the dust content. This adds to the sugar content and realistically is an offering of sweets to your horse!

With fussy eaters, we recommend introducing CoolStance very gradually starting off with small amounts and over time reducing your current feed. Some horses can take up to 8 weeks to change over.

Yes, CoolStance is suitable for horses or ponies on box rest. Horses or ponies that are on box rest should have their diets adjusted to suit their reduced levels of activity. So we would recommend, as with any feed, to reduce the amount of CoolStance and then readjust accordingly as and when they come back in to work.

It is ideal for horses on box rest as it is a truly cool feed that won’t contribute to fizzy behaviour often seen with horses that have been on box rest for a period of time.

We recommend mixing CoolStance Copra with one-part CoolStance to three-parts water. The recommended weights in the table below are dry weights, before mixing with water.

If you’re using cold water, leave for 5 minutes before feeding. If you’re using warm/hot water, it will be ready to feed straight away or once it’s cooled to a suitable temperature. Mix well before feeding.

CoolStance Copra is not a balanced feed, so we recommend feeding a good quality vitamin and mineral supplement or balancer alongside CoolStance Copra, such as VitaStance Mineral Mix or VitaStance B1 Cool Mix.

We advise feeding your horse little and often, and always make sure your horse has access to clean, fresh water.

We recommend in summer months not leaving feed more that 12 hours once mixed with water and 24 hours in winter months.

The feeding guidelines are for an average horse weighing 500kg.

Retired / Resting

The horse weighs 500kg and is retired to the field. We would recommend feeding approximately 500g of Copra per day split between two feeds.

Light Work

The horse weighs 500kg and is hacked no more than 4 times a week for up to 1 hour, mainly in walk. We would recommend feeding 500g – 1kg of Copra split between two feeds.

Medium Work

The horse weighs 500kg and is mainly schooled up to 6 times a week for up to an hour, this includes jumping. We would recommend feeding 1kg – 2kg of Copra split between two feeds.

Hard Work

The horse weighs 500kg and will most likely be a racehorse in training or competitive horse being worked 7 days a week in high intensity work including, galloping for longer intervals, high level schooling, regular cross-country sessions and endurance riding etc. We recommend feeding between 2-3kg of Copra split between two feeds.

Understanding NSC

NSC stands for non-structural carbohydrates which is essentially the combined sugar and starch content in feed and pasture.

Why is Low NSC Important?

High levels of NSC in horse feed can have detrimental effects to horses and ponies that are insulin resistant, prone to tying up or are in other ways, metabolically challenged. So selecting a feed that is low in NSC is particularly important for these types of horses. Similarly, high NSC feeds can also cause or contribute to the above issues.

What are Safe Levels of NSC?

Generally any feed that contains <12% NSC is considered safe to feed. For example, if a starch level is 10% and sugar 10% this would total 20% NSC which would be considered high NSC and an unsafe feed.

The Difficulties with High Energy Feeds

Most high energy feeds use grain as the main energy source. With this often comes high starch, which in small, manageable quantities can sometimes prove effective. But these starch levels are often exceeding safe amounts and can most likely be problematic and cause starch related diseases and disorders such as tying up, bad behaviour and colic.

The Solution

Oil is the most useful non starch source of extra energy for athletic horses. It contains 2 to 3 times more energy than starch or protein and once horses have adapted to it, oil is well accepted, digested and metabolized. Horses readily adapt to oil-rich diets and burn it to produce valuable energy for their muscles during medium and high intensity exercise. CoolStance Copra is one of the very few feeds that is low in NSC, high in fibre and a great source of digestible energy.

How Can CoolStance Copra Help with My Metabolically Challenged Horse?

Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS)

Selecting suitable feeds for a horse affected by EMS is not an easy task. Forages vary dramatically in the level of NSC they contain, with forages like ryegrass and oat hay capable of having NSC 30%. Weather damaged Lucerne hay and stemmy, mature pasture hay is most likely to contain suitably low levels of non-structural carbohydrates. Grain can contain NSC content over 60%. Only feeds with < 12% NSC should be considered for horses susceptible to EMS. When you have selected a suitable feed, it should be introduced into your horse’s diet slowly, as some EMS horses are extremely sensitive and will still react to a feed, even though it may seem suitable. It is also important to feed little and often to avoid insulin spikes associated with the expectation of feeding. CoolStance Copra contains <11% NSC so is a safe and suitable feed for EMS diagnosed horses and ponies.

Laminitis

In a similar way to management of an EMS diagnosed horse or pony, laminitis is a condition that should be managed as a form of prevention. Laminitis is a complex disease where the laminae in the hoof, which are the structures responsible for suspending the horses pedal bone from the hoof wall, become inflamed. When the laminae inflame, they lose their integrity and allow the weight of the horse to drive the pedal bone downward through the hoof, damaging arteries, veins, the corium of the coronet and the sole of the hoof. Once the pedal bone moves, the condition is then referred to as founder. Weight, diet and exercise are all important factors to consider when managing a horse or pony prone to laminitis. If a horse or pony has laminitis due to being overweight, we would recommend offering reduced amounts of CoolStance Copra until the horse’s weight has been successfully managed. Due to CoolStance being low in sugar and starch, it is a suitable choice for a laminitis prone horse.

Tying Up (Azoturia)

Tying-up, otherwise known as Monday Morning Sickness or azoturia is a term used to describe muscle disorders affecting some breeds of horses. Horses suffering with tying-up may experience painful muscle contractions, stiffness, profuse sweating, and elevated respiratory rates during or following exercise. The feeding of grain will often increase the occurrence of tying up in susceptible horses. Grains provide energy in the form of sugar and starch (non-structural carbohydrate). Starch is broken down in the small intestine and absorbed into the bloodstream as glucose. For horses affected by tying up, feeding high (NSC) starch diets increases the circulating insulin concentrations, leading to storage of an unusual polysaccharide in the muscles. This may increase the chances of the tying up occurring in some breeds of horses. High starch diets often contribute to the horse being highly excitable and nervous, making the horse more susceptible to tying-up. In a nutshell, feeding grain to susceptible horses may increases the risk of tying-up. Research has shown that horses prone to tying up both benefit from a low starch diet (<12% NSC) that contains some oil. Copra meal is a natural, high energy feed that contains 8% oil and less than <12% NSC, Research has also shown that copra meal does not increase circulating glucose or insulin after feeding.

Cushing's Disease

Always be mindful that Cushing’s Disease has a profound effect on a horse’s metabolism and body function. It requires a thorough veterinary assessment and laboratory workup to ascertain the extent of the condition and also whether there are any other medical conditions present as well. Management and treatment of any cushingoid horse should always be under veterinary supervision.

What is Cushing's Disease

It starts with the enlargement of the pituitary gland at the base of the brain – either through a benign tumour or hypertrophy through over activity which then starts a cascade of hormonal events throughout the body. The pituitary gland is a master controlling gland that sends out hormones to other glands in the body to keep metabolic and endocrine systems working properly. Most of the clinical signs of this condition are related to excess hormone from the pituitary gland affecting the adrenal glands near the kidney.

Management of Cushing's Disease

Any drugs that are given do not treat the pituitary condition itself but are used to manage the side effects of the pituitary condition. A thorough veterinary assessment of each individual case will lead to the best way to treat the condition.

In addition to medication, a cushingoid horse must have good supportive care with regular effective worming, dental and hoof checks, and a good quality diet. The diet should be largely a roughage-based diet with a multimineral vitamin supplement like VitaStance Mineral Mix. Due to CoolStance Copra being low in sugars and starch it is a suitable choice for any horse suffering from Cushings. Avoid feeding grains because there is a higher risk of laminitis and diabetes.

In March, my horse Flash underwent emergency colic surgery for a distended bowel. His case was quite severe and he was very lucky to make it through. During this two week stay at the vets after this surgery, I was incredibly saddened to see his beautiful glossy coat disappear and his weight drop away dramatically – although I was also relieved he was still with me! For the first two weeks after Flash came home, he had to stay on a strict veterinary prescribed diet that was gentle on his tummy. After this time, with the vets permission, Flash was allowed to return to his normal diet, which includes the wonderful CoolStance. Within the first week of him returning to his copra, the shine in his coat started to return. His attitude seemed better, and his pointy little bottom started to fill out. A few more weeks on he was looking great for a horse that recently underwent a major trauma. His glossy coat returned and his eyes are bright. I took on responsibility for Nikki the morning he collapsed due to malnutrition. The vet had been called out, and said he should be euthanased but due to our location and environmental challenges it would be better to make arrangements first. He gave steroids and pain relief to help Nikki in the meantime.

Nikki perked up so well I realised that the main problem was his teeth. He’d recently been attended by a dentist, and the vet had checked and said his teeth were fine. They weren’t fine. Most of his molars were missing, so while he was eating, the lack of chewing caused considerable problems for the digestion of the food. The recent dental work had made his teeth sore stopping him from eating anything. As soon as he had the pain relief he started eating.

He’s not really the most robust horse, he has collagen problems which is likely why his teeth fell out but also has a problem with building and maintaining muscle. As a youngster it was decided to leave him entire as he was going to need the extra testosterone for strength. The collagen problems also make it more difficult for him to swallow if his head is down.

It was a bit of a mindset change for me as I’ve always had horses who are prone to being overweight, not underweight. Most options are high starch, high sugar, and while some extra carbs weren’t a bad idea as such, to feed those feeds in the quantities Nikki needed them would have caused gut problems.

My budget for Nikki was…erm…. Nothing. Not only that but he came as a job lot of 3 horses, 1 we lost to kidney disease, the other was fine. I tried all sorts of things to find a way to feed him on my limited budget. I knew CoolStance would be a great solution but getting it delivered to us meant ordering a whole pallet, which was an expense I couldn’t justify.

I tried everything I could think of, and had the help of a number of equine nutritionists, equine scientists, vets and other equine professionals assisting me (rehabbing horses professionally for years means I have a pretty good list of specialists I can turn to).

I sat down and crunched the numbers. Even with the delivery cost it actually turned out that CoolStance was cheaper than the cheap options I was sourcing locally. Local could mean anything up to a 2hr drive each way! The local options of soya, oil, grains, alfalfa and molassed beet had made some improvement, but not enough, (not to mention the ataxia one of those feeds had caused!) Not only was CoolStance cheaper, it was significantly more suitable and a far healthier and easier solution.

This is one of those cases where a picture paints a thousand words. I don’t really need to say how effective copra is, the ‘after’ picture of Nikki says it all really.

Blaise is an ex-racehorse. He raced on the flat and hurdles for 4 years, with limited success.
We bought him as a six-year-old, having done very little after racing. He has always been quite a “hot” horse at times and can move very quickly in all directions when he wants to! He was diagnosed with kissing spine and had 6 snips four years ago which has changed things enormously.
However, one of the best things I did with both our horses (the other one is a lovely, very active, 24-year-old ID x TB mare), is move them off mixed feeds to Coolstance, some 5 years ago. My farrier, Nigel Gatesman, who did another huge favour and moved both horses to barefoot 6 years ago, recommended feeding Coolstance for healthy feet.
Since putting him on Coolstance, Blaise has always kept excellent condition throughout the year. He is kept out 24/7 throughout the year with a field shelter, in a 3 acre field on the slopes of the Mendip Hills, so gets lots of hill work. He has become less spooky, and more consistent in his work in dressage and showing.
I get numerous comments on their shiny coats all year and their good condition all year round, getting a bit fatter in summer to tide them over winter as nature intended, without any issues. I put this down to the Coolstance. It provides excellent condition without putting on unwanted weight and keeping them sensible and working nicely. Their hooves are in excellent condition and Nigel only has to come 3-4 times a year to check and trim them as they keep good on the roadwork. Again, diet is very important for healthy hooves.
In October 2019, after not doing any showing for some time and concentrating on dressage, I took Blaise to the local show where he won the Supreme Champion in-hand horse as an 18 year old veteran against a lot of much younger horses and many professionally produced. The judge commented on his excellent condition and elasticity of movement. I was amazed at this and put it to the huge benefits of Coolstance for good health, even in an older horse who still thinks he’s 3!
I would not change their diets as they are both so fit and healthy.

After working out that he has an intolerance to Soya, if it wasn’t for CoolStance, I honestly don’t know what we would be feeding him! Copra provides Johnny with a sufficient amount of fibre & energy also giving him an extremely shiny coat! He’s a bit fussy when it comes to his feed but he licks the bowl clean so must absolutely love the coconut flavour! We run a business buying National Hunt foals and produce them for sale or to go in training. We also do this for other people too. Nutrition and feeding is very important to us and we have found a very successful formula, which includes CoolStance Copra. Apart from producing good condition it really helps the health of the gut. We have had horses that have been on gastroguard after being scoped with grade 4 ulcers and with feeding CoolStance with no gastroguard they have been returned to training with no signs of ulcers after scoping. It is a wonderful feed when horses come back into work and they need building up but without the heating effects of some feeds.

When I first got her in April, I hadn’t heard of your products, and had started her on Alfalfa cubes, senior feed and was fixing to start using beet pulp to try and get her to gain weight (of course while being able to graze 24 hours a day, being fed twice daily and giving her hay twice a day). After almost 2 months, I thought I should have noticed more of a difference. THANK GOODNESS, a friend contacted me about CoolStance and filled me in about your products! I was stoked hearing, that on top of the nutrients and how easy it was to mix up, you are all-organic and NON-GMO! After making the switch, it didn’t take long to see the difference. She was gaining weight, her hair was no longer patchy, her skin irritations we’re going away and her hooves were looking better! On top of all that, I was now saving ££ too!

When I first got Jaffa the pigment around his left eye reduced a little with good food and a broad spectrum vitamin and mineral supplement. But only when I started feeding him CoolStance Copra and Vitastance Mineral Mix about 9 months ago did it disappear. This feed has changed him from a reasonably excitable TB into a calm, happy, compliant boy who loves his work and who retains his weight extremely well. I have also noticed a marked improvement in his hoof quality, he is now bare foot, which I never thought would happen. Jaffa could never have his shoes off because they would just break away and he couldn’t walk. His skin and his coat are beautiful. Because Jaffa looks so well, my hunter who loses weight easily is now on the Copra and is also looking fab. This feed and supplement is cost-effective and the delivery is excellent. I can’t recommend it enough. I have recently just bought another thoroughbred which isn’t in great shape but he is starting to look so much better now is he also on Copra.

I have been feeding CoolStance copra for approximately 8 years after we were struggling to find a feed suitable for my 138cm fizzy and hot headed mare that was loosing weight. It was fantastic at putting weight on and maintaining a shinny coat without sending her into orbit! We have since used your products on all our horses from the 138’s to more recently my 172cm Belgian warmblood that I have evented at 1* level and SJ up to 1.30m successfully. We even feed the CoolStance to Veteran laminetics and native breeds. All our horses have gleaming healthy coats, maintain weight, have healthy hoofs whilst they remain focused and don’t get hot headed when competing. We add a basic chaff to the products, meaning it’s cheap to feed for what we believe it’s worth. I work in a pet shop and recommend it to pretty much all our customers. I wouldn’t dream of changing their diets as the results show just how good and versatile it is.

I have owned Knocknacree Prince (aka Maddox) for 3 years. He is a 12yr old 17.3hh Irish bred gelding and we hunt with the Coakham Bloodhounds in the South East of England. Hunting with the Bloodhounds requires a very fit horse. Our country varies from galloping up and down the steep hills of the South Downs, to fabulous big hedge days. Having successfully used Coolstance Copra in the past on other horses, it seemed an obvious choice to use this as part of his feeding regime. Coolstance Copra gives him the needed slow release energy to keep him fueled for a days hunting, helps maintain condition and, as he has a lot of natural energy, does not make him over the top and fizzy. His coat always has an amazing shine and my husband who is a farrier is very happy with the overall condition of his feet.

After discovering Coolstance Copra through work, I have been feeding it to my horses for the past three years. It has been amazing for keeping condition on the string throughout both the grass and arena seasons. As a non-heating feed it not only ensures they stay as level headed as possible during play but also delivers consistent slow release energy, allowing the horses to perform game after game. Since being fed on copra, the high oil content has also left all my horses with glistening coats, enabling them to look their best! As well as being great for the horses, the feed has the added benefit of being really cost effective when feeding a bigger string, something that is critical in polo.

I would just like to say that this feed made a huge change in my horse who has anhidrosis, before CoolStance Copra he would not sweat at all, we would go hacking through the national parks, up hills and uneven surfaces and Archer would have loud labored breathing, be hot to touch with no sweat and his head would hang to the ground and take a long time to recover. Since using CoolStance he lathers up, has more energy and his breathing has improved and recovers quicker. CoolStance has made my life and Archers life so much better.

Both my horses are fed Coolstance Copra and Vitastance B1 Cool Mix and have never looked better! My main competition horse Caegarw Pollyanna, a 12 year old Sports Horse x Welsh; is a good doer but is very fussy and Copra is the only thing she will eat her supplements with! My other horse Mount Mayon, a 6 year old Thoroughbred; looks like a different horse since feeding him on Coolstance Copra! Keeps the condition on him without any excess energy or fizziness.

I own my son’s old pony Teddy, a 12.1h Dartmoor aged 31. During winter 2020/21 he lost a huge amount of weight despite teeth etc regularly attended, he was so bad I didn’t want to take his rug off. I took no pictures as I was mortified by his condition. Last year my son told me about CoolStance Copra so I started feeding it to him in September, he suffers from laminitis so I was a bit wary. Had no need to worry, he loved it and safely put on weight. This spring had no problems taking off the rug, am totally delighted with this product and would strongly recommend it to anyone struggling to keep weight on their horse.

“I have been using Coolstance Copra for quite a few years now having been recommended it by an old hunt groom for a horse that couldn’t hold his weight. It is brilliant stuff, very pure, and I now feed it to all ours from the laminitic/cushings 22 year old pony to the TB 1* eventer. It keeps weight on without being fizzy and their coats look amazing. Being low in sugar/starch it is great for the pony with EMS. Keep trying if your horse doesn’t like it and little by little they will. Ours all love it.”

I have been feeding Coolstance Copra, Tumericle and Vitastance to my elderly horses for over 8 years now. As we live on the edge of Dartmoor it’s very important to keep weight and condition on my older horses through the winter.
My herd consists of our my elderly warmblood ex Grand Prix dressage horse Charlotte who is 32 years old, ex endurance Arabian Blue 29 years old, disabled welsh section D Dilly 28 years old , Almaz our Akhal Teke 27 years old , sand creek Crow dancer our warm blood American paint cross 22 years old and Dollys little miracle, American paint cross Dartmoor pony 21 years old. I also have a 13 year old PRE .

As I work in the equine industry I never hesitate to recommend these feeds to any of my clients who I think it will benefit . I consider it one of the things which contributes to my horses longevity .
